Each one is designed for independent travelers who want a complete route without having to plan from scratch. Pick your direction, rent a 4x4, and drive at your own pace. All three tours start with a stop at Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, just 20 km from Tbilisi. From there, the routes split west, north, and south. #1 - 4X4 Tour in Georgia – Mtskheta, Gori, Mestia, Racha, Chiatura - 7 days
Western Georgia. 7 Days.
This route covers the Caucasus highlands, Svaneti's UNESCO-listed towers, the Racha valley, and the Soviet-era mining town of Chiatura. It is the most demanding of the three tours. Some sections between Zugdidi and Mestia require confident 4WD handling.
Suggested vehicle: Jeep Renegade 4WD or Renault Duster 4WD.
Day 1. Tbilisi to Mtskheta and Gori. (120 km)
Start at Mtskheta, UNESCO World Heritage site and ancient capital of Georgia. Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery. Allow two hours. Continue to Gori for the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe cave town. Overnight in Gori.
Day 2. Gori to Kutaisi. (150 km)
Head west to Kutaisi. Stop at Surami Fortress. Visit Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, both UNESCO sites. The Prometheus Cave near Tskaltubo is worth two hours. Overnight in Kutaisi.
Day 3. Kutaisi to Zugdidi. (120 km)
Drive northwest to Zugdidi, the gateway to Svaneti. Visit the Dadiani Palace Museum. Stock up on supplies and fuel before heading into the mountains. Overnight in Zugdidi.
Day 4. Zugdidi to Mestia. (130 km)
The most demanding driving day. The road climbs through the Enguri Gorge with gravel sections and steep bends. 4WD required in wet or winter conditions. Allow four to five hours. Mestia sits at 1,500 metres surrounded by medieval Svan towers. Overnight in Mestia (two nights recommended).
Day 5. Mestia. Free day.
Drive to Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe, 45 km on an unpaved road at 2,200 metres. Views of Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak, on clear days. Full 4WD required. Overnight in Mestia.
Day 6. Mestia to Ambrolauri via Oni. (230 km)
Return toward Zugdidi then cut east into the Racha region. The valley follows the Rioni River through pine forest and wine villages. Try Khvanchkara, a semi-sweet red wine produced only here. Overnight in Ambrolauri or Oni.
Day 7. Ambrolauri to Chiatura and Tbilisi. (250 km)
Drive to Chiatura, a former Soviet manganese mining town built across a deep gorge. The original cable cars still connect the canyon floor to the ridges above. Return to Tbilisi via Zestaponi. Allow four to five hours.
#2 - 4X4 Tour in Georgia - Mtskheta, Kakheti, Gergeti, Stephantsminda, Gudauri - 7 days
Northern Georgia. 7 Days.
This route combines Georgia's wine country in the east with the high Caucasus in the north. You travel through Kakheti, the country's main wine region, then loop north to Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Highway. This is the most popular self-drive route in Georgia.
Suggested vehicle: Jeep Renegade 4WD, Renault Duster 4WD, or Mitsubishi Pajero IO 4x4.
Day 1. Tbilisi to Mtskheta and Sighnaghi. (160 km)
Start with two hours at Mtskheta. Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery. Continue east into Kakheti to Sighnaghi, a hilltop town with restored stone walls and views over the Alazani valley. Visit Bodbe Monastery nearby. Overnight in Sighnaghi.
Day 2. Sighnaghi to Telavi via Kvareli and Lagodekhi. (210 km)
Drive east to Kvareli for the Kindzmarauli underground wine tunnel. Continue to Lagodekhi Protected Areas for a short forest hike. Return west to Telavi. Visit Ikalto Monastery and Alaverdi Cathedral. Overnight in Telavi.
Day 3. Telavi to Tbilisi via David Gareja. (250 km)
The David Gareja cave monastery sits on the semi-desert border with Azerbaijan, 60 km south of Telavi. 4WD recommended for the approach in wet conditions. The 6th-century cave churches have exceptionally well-preserved frescoes. Return to Tbilisi for the night.
Day 4. Tbilisi to Ananuri and Gudauri. (120 km)
Head north on the Georgian Military Highway. Stop at Ananuri Fortress on the Zhinvali Reservoir. Continue to Gudauri at 2,200 metres. Visit the Soviet-era friendship monument for sweeping Caucasus views. Overnight in Gudauri.
Day 5. Gudauri to Stephantsminda (Kazbegi). (30 km)
A short drive to Stephantsminda at 1,700 metres. The Gergeti Trinity Church sits on a ridge at 2,170 metres above town. The road up requires 4WD. On clear days the views of the glacier and peaks are exceptional. Overnight in Stephantsminda (two nights recommended).
Day 6. Stephantsminda. Free day.
Drive the Truso Valley (approx. 20 km west on a rough 4WD track) to mineral springs, an abandoned village, and Zakagori Fortress. Alternatively, hike toward the Gergeti Glacier with a local guide. Overnight in Stephantsminda.
Day 7. Stephantsminda to Tbilisi. (150 km)
Return south along the Military Highway. Stop at the Dariali Gorge viewpoint and the Sioni Reservoir. Back in Tbilisi in two to three hours on fully paved road.
#3 - 4X4 Tour to Georgia – Mtskheta, Vardzia, Akhaltsikhe, Bakuriani, Borjomi - 5 days
Southern Georgia. 5 Days.
The southern route is the shortest and most compact of the three. It covers the semi-arid Javakheti plateau, the medieval cave city of Vardzia, the Ottoman-era fortress town of Akhaltsikhe, and the spa resort valley of Borjomi. 4WD is useful on the Vardzia access road and on higher elevation stretches around Bakuriani in autumn and winter.
Suggested vehicle: Renault Duster 4WD or Mitsubishi Pajero IO 4x4.
Day 1. Tbilisi to Mtskheta and Borjomi. (200 km)
Begin at Mtskheta for Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery. Drive south and west along the Mtkvari River to Borjomi. The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest protected forests in the Caucasus, begins just east of town. Walk the main park and the original mineral spring wells. Overnight in Borjomi.
Day 2. Borjomi to Akhaltsikhe and Rabati. (60 km)
A short drive to Akhaltsikhe. Rabati Castle dominates the town centre. The complex holds a mosque, church, synagogue, and citadel within the same walls, reflecting the region's layered history under Georgian, Ottoman, and Russian rule. Allow two to three hours. Overnight in Akhaltsikhe.
Day 3. Akhaltsikhe to Vardzia. (60 km)
Vardzia is the highlight of the southern route. The cave monastery city was carved into volcanic rock in the 12th century during the reign of Queen Tamar. At its peak the complex contained over 3,000 rooms across 13 floors. Today around 400 rooms remain accessible. The portrait of Queen Tamar in the main church is among the finest frescoes in Georgia. The road is narrow and requires careful driving. Overnight near Vardzia or return to Akhaltsikhe.
Day 4. Vardzia to Bakuriani via Aspindza. (100 km)
Return north and take the mountain road to Bakuriani through the Trialeti range. Bakuriani is a ski resort at 1,700 metres. The road from the south via Aspindza rises quickly on a rough surface. 4WD is the better choice here. In summer Bakuriani is quiet with open meadows and hiking trails. Overnight in Bakuriani.
Day 5. Bakuriani to Tbilisi via Borjomi. (220 km)
Descend to Borjomi and return to Tbilisi on the main highway. The drive takes three to four hours. Stop in Gori or Mtskheta for a final break before the city.
